The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a capable SUV equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 168 hp and 167 lb-ft.
But the Outlander Sport’s raw power values are only a small part of what makes the SUV so enjoyable to drive. Both engines make use of the manufacturer’s Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control System, or MIVEC, a technology it has been developed since the early nineties to enhance power delivery and responsiveness while improving efficiency.
MIVEC essentially makes it possible to control the intake valve timing and the amount of valve lift simultaneously and continuously. This is different to traditional engines that can only increase air intake when a piston descends via a throttle valve, and allows the Outlander Sport to benefit from reduced pumping losses and optimized fuel-efficiency.
With the 2.0-liter engine, the Outlander Sport is rated at 24 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined, strong figures for a crossover SUV.* Even the more powerful 2.4-liter engine boasts up to 29 mpg on the highway.
Part of that efficiency is courtesy of the continuously variable transmission, which comes as standard equipment on all Outlander Sport models, though a 5-speed manual is optional on the 2.0 ES trim. The CVT, unlike conventional automatic transmissions, can adjust its own gear ratio on the fly without the need to shift gears, contributing to smoother and more even acceleration.
Finally, for extra control, the 2019 Outlander Sport is equipped with Mitsubishi’s revolutionary All-Wheel Control, which continually monitors the road and transfers power and braking to the wheels with the most traction to ensure a smooth ride.
Though the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is geared toward families, with convenience and safety features aplenty, it’s also very fun to drive. See for yourself with a test drive at El Cajon Mitsubishi!
